Dramatic Black and White Effect Photoshop Tutorial

The dramatic black and white effect Photoshop tutorial doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact it should be almost as simple as taking the photograph itself. If you have been frustrated by the lengthy tutorial then look no further because here is a quick and easy lesson to get the dramatic black and white look in Photoshop.

Upload your original high resolution color photo to Photoshop. (Note-Make sure the image is color)

Go to adjustment layer > gradient map and press OK. Make sure your foreground/background color swatch is set to the default black and white. If it’s not then reset your gradient to black foreground and white background as it appears in the image below.

If you like what you see you are done. However if you want to add a little extra drama and depth to the image click on your gradient bar so the main adjustment box opens up. If for any reason the image looks inverted check off the box that reads reverse to correct it.

Move your black color stop to the right and move your white color stop to the left which will change your location percentage. You don’t have to move it much to get a more dramatic look but a little adjustment will add that extra something to make your photo pop. For my tutorial I adjusted it to read 5% black & 95% white.
