As a portrait photographer the most popular question I have heard over the years is “how much does your photography session cost?” While I will agree that the question is valid and has importance, there are several other factors to be considered before booking a portrait photographer.
10 Questions To Ask Your Portrait Photographer
1. How many photos come with the portrait session?
Aside from mini photo sessions, most good portrait photographers shoot about 200-300 images per session. That approximation should include clothing changes and various angle shots to capture natural expressions during the shoot.
Tip – If the photographer shoots more than 500 photos chances are they don’t know what they are doing.
2. How long does the photo session last?
On the average, most professional photography sessions last 2 hours for men and 3 for women. A woman’s session is more meticulous in nature because of hair and makeup and should be treated as such.
Tip – If you can, bring music along with you to ease the nerves.
3. Do you have any suggestions on what I should wear?
A good photographer should have an opinion on clothing but you always want to wear something that makes you feel GREAT. Wether you are business casual or sporty, look your best in what you wear or don’t bring it.
Tip – Stay away from logos unless the company is paying you to promote.
4. Do I need hair and makeup for the shoot?
I cannot stress this enough. YES! Experience the whole package because it will look better in the end. I assume you don’t go out to dinner and cook your own meal so I suggest not making yourself up for your photo shoot.
Tip – If you can’t afford hair and makeup try bartering.
5. Will you direct me during the session?
A portrait photographer is more than just a photographer. We are artists who capture moments that you will cherish forever so have faith in the process and know that we will direct you.
Tip – If during your session your photographer says “smile” ask for your money back.
6. When can I view my pictures?
Every photographer various but it can be between 24 hours to 2 weeks depending on how popular the photographer is and what season your session is shot. Anything longer than that I would question. (Weddings don’t apply)
Tip – Ask your photographer beforehand so there are no surprises down the line.
7. How long until I get a copy of my pictures from my photo session?
Once again, depending on the photographer it can take up to 2 weeks to get a disc to you. Weddings take even longer.
Tip – Read or ask what others are saying to know what to expect .
8. How much does the portrait session cost?
This is the million dollar question. You can find sessions for as cheap as free to $1500 depending on where you live and how good the photographer is. Do your homework and ask for people’s honest review. If there is no information on he or she then set up a metting.(weddings prices are completely different)
Tip – Feel comfortable with whoever you decide to shoot with.
9. Where can I print copies of my photos?
Tip – Walgreens, CVS and Kmart are great last minute places.
10. Do you touch up any of the photos?
Most photographers do skin touch ups for a certain amount of photos and it is usually included in the price of the portrait session. If you want more artistic photoshop work then expect to pay more because touch ups are time consuming.
Tip – Make sure to see some before and after photo to make your final decision.
